Review: Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi

Title: Shatter Me
Author: Tahereh Mafi
Genre: Dystopian, Paranormal
Pages: 338, Hardcover
Publisher: Harper

Goodread Synopsis:
Juliette hasn’t touched anyone in exactly 264 days.

The last time she did, it was an accident, but The Reestablishment locked her up for murder. No one knows why Juliette’s touch is fatal. As long as she doesn’t hurt anyone else, no one really cares. The world is too busy crumbling to pieces to pay attention to a 17-year-old girl. Diseases are destroying the population, food is hard to find, birds don’t fly anymore, and the clouds are the wrong color.

The Reestablishment said their way was the only way to fix things, so they threw Juliette in a cell. Now so many people are dead that the survivors are whispering war– and The Reestablishment has changed its mind. Maybe Juliette is more than a tortured soul stuffed into a poisonous body. Maybe she’s exactly what they need right now.

Juliette has to make a choice: Be a weapon. Or be a warrior.

So, I have spent about two day trying to figure out how to put my feelings about this book into words. But, as I am having no luck, I just going to go with typing down whatever pops into my head!
Okay first off I LOVE Juliette! Just everything about her, from her skepticism to her love, all throughout the book is beautiful. I also love the fact that she struggles with her power, while a lot of people see what she can do as a gift, she view it as a curse and I think that, that shows how great Juliette is as a character!
Another thing about his book was that I didnt completely hate the villain. Yes, while Warren was excessively annoying and quite pushy when it came to his feeling, I didnt hate him for some reason. The whole time I was reading it, I just though of him as product of his environment as a child. Like, his dad was crazy and completely obsessed with power, therefore, Warren is also completely crazy and obsessed with power and has the drive to achieve it at any cost, even if it means manipulating the people around him.
There is so much more that I loved about this book because I literally enjoyed every moment of it and I cannot wait to hear your guy’s thoughts on it also! Now, I must go off to read Fated because my Unravel me book isn’t here yet!

Synopsis
Some things are worth waiting for…
Traveling thousands of miles from home to enter college is the only way nineteen-year-old Avery Morgansten can escape what happened at the Halloween party five years ago—an event that forever changed her life. All she needs to do is make it to her classes on time, make sure the bracelet on her left wrist stays in place, not draw any attention to herself, and maybe—please God—make a few friends, because surely that would be a nice change of pace. The one thing she didn’t need and never planned on was capturing the attention of the one guy who could shatter the precarious future she’s building for herself.
Some things are worth experiencing…
Cameron Hamilton is six feet and three inches of swoon-worthy hotness, complete with a pair of striking blue eyes and a remarkable ability to make her want things she believed were irrevocably stolen from her. She knows she needs to stay away from him, but Cam is freaking everywhere, with his charm, his witty banter, and that damn dimple that’s just so… so lickable. Getting involved with him is dangerous, but when ignoring the simmering tension that sparks whenever they are around each other becomes impossible, he brings out a side of her she never knew existed.
Some things should never be kept quiet…
But when Avery starts receiving threatening emails and phone calls forcing her to face a past she wants silenced, she’s has no other choice but to acknowledge that someone is refusing to allow her to let go of that night when everything changed. When the devastating truth comes out, will she resurface this time with one less scar? And can Cam be there to help her or will he be dragged down with her?
And some things are worth fighting for…

GIVEAWAY:

Top Ten Authors I’d Put On My Auto-Buy List

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by the Broke and the Booksish.

This week’s topic for Top Ten Tuesday is the top ten authors I’d put on my auto-buy list. This means that, without question, I would buy these authors’ books no matter what. So, in no particular order (because these authors are all AMAZING) here is my list:

1. Cassandra Clare- This woman is exceptionally talented… in making me an emotional wreck. I swear, I’ve cried, laughed, and immensely enjoyed every single one of her books. Cassandra Clare books are my weakness.

2. Rick Riordan- I love this author. I’ve been reading his books since 6th grade, and I’ve LOVED every single one of them. They’re entertaining, and have some of the best characters to ever exist.

3. John Green- Yet another author who can cause extreme emotional damage. Although I’ve only read two of his books (TFiOS and Looking for Alaska), but I’ve loved them both so much. With both of them, I’ve read them in a single sitting. They’re beautiful and fantastic and so so heartbreaking.

4. Veronica Roth- The Divergent series is one of my all time favorite series. I love the way Roth writes. It’s simple, yet contains so much meaning.

5. Stephanie Perkins- Stephanie Perkins writes some of the SWEETEST stories of all time. I love contemporary books, and with both of her books, she does everything exactly write. She writes great stories and even better characters, both of which you can’t help but fall in love with.

6. Ally Carter- Ally Carter has a way of flawlessly mixing action, romance, and intricate plot in every single book of hers.

7. Jennifer L. Armentrout- JLA writes books with some of my favorite characters and romances of all time. Her characters are both perfect and perfectly flawed, and her romances are the same way. She has this way of making it interesting every single page.

8. J.K. Rowling- Do I even need to elaborate on this author? Her writing is so intricately crafted and planned that it’s flawless. Her characters have become loved all around the world, as is her writing.

9. Suzanne Collins- In her Hunger Games series, Suzanne Collins molds a beautiful yet scary world. It’s realistic and so symbolic of our own society. She takes the worst and best of our society and amazingly projects it into her work to make a beautiful book. Her characters are flawed and great and so so real, and I love them.

10. Marcus Zusak- This man. Wow. What do I even say? His book The Book Thief takes something so terrible and turns it into this beautiful story full of love, loss, and friendship. This book is just written so flawlessly and absolutely beautiful.

Review: Perfect Scoundrels by Ally Carter

Title: Perfect Scoundrels
Author: Ally Carter
Genre: Mystery; Adventure
Pages: Hardcover, 328
Publication: February 5, 2013

Synopsis:
Katarina Bishop and W.W. Hale the fifth were born to lead completely different lives: Kat comes from a long, proud line of loveable criminal masterminds, while Hale is the scion of one of the most seemingly perfect dynasties in the world. If their families have one thing in common, it’s that they both know how to stay under the radar while getting–or stealing–whatever they want. No matter the risk, the Bishops can always be counted on, but in Hale’s family, all bets are off when money is on the line. When Hale unexpectedly inherits his grandmother’s billion dollar corporation, he quickly learns that there’s no place for Kat and their old heists in his new role. But Kat won’t let him go that easily, especially after she gets tipped off that his grandmother’s will might have been altered in an elaborate con to steal the company’s fortune. So instead of being the heir–this time, Hale might be the mark. Forced to keep a level head as she and her crew fight for one of their own, Kat comes up with an ambitious and far-reaching plan that only the Bishop family would dare attempt. To pull it off, Kat is prepared to do the impossible, but first, she has to decide if she’s willing to save her boyfriend’s company if it means losing the boy.

I’ve been a fan of Ally Carter’s writing for years, ever since I read I’d Tell You I Love You But Then I’d Have to Kill You (1st book in the Gallagher Girls series) about 4 years ago. She’s never failed to impress me. Her writing is always so simple, but it’s so incredibly good. Plus, her books are never boring. There’s always some action, a fantastic romance, and an intricate plotline. Perfect Scoundrels was no different.

I’m going to say it now. Ally Carter is pure genius. How she comes up with these plots and stories, I have no idea. Like all her books, Perfect Scoundrels has such a complex plot line. But it’s not one of those stories where the author gets in over her head. Ally Carter knows exactly what she’s doing, and where the story is going. I’m always so impressed at how complex and involved each heist is, and how her characters go through the motions to do them. And it seems with each Heist Society book, each heist gets bigger and better.

I love each of the characters in these books, and I love how in this one, we get to see them mature and become adults. Character development is probably the thing I look forward to most in a book, and Perfect Scoundrels had it. We finally get to see Kat growing up and become more responsible for her actions. We get to see Hale, who always seems so perfect, finally show some of his imperfections and vulnerability. The way Ally Carter writes these characters and their developments, is beautiful.

I think I need to fangirl a little bit about the romance in this book… OH MY GOD. KALE. HAT. (Whatever you want to call it…) It was probably my favorite part of the book. Their relationship is so sweet, and real, and I love it so so much. Ally does a great job writing their relationship, and making it seem as real as possible in situations that aren’t so real all the time. Also, I love that she shows how Hale acts with Kat in regards to both sides of his life. The interactions with Hale as Kat’s boyfriend and Kat’s family were absolutely hilarious. It gives Hale a family that he didn’t really have before, and I love it. I’m super excited to see what happens with their relationship in later books.

Ally Carter’s Perfect Scoundrels is an adventure that you won’t want to stop reading. You connect with the story and fall in love with the characters completely. This book has everything that a good story contains: an incredibly sweet romance, action, and humor. It does not disappoint.

5 out of 5 stars

Waiting on Wednesday: Apollyon by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Breaking the Spine where we share new releases that we’re looking forward to.

Title: Apollyon

Author: Jennifer L. Armentrout
Genre: Mythology; Fantasy
Pages: Paperback, 360
Publication: April 9, 2013

Synopsis:
Fate isn’t something to mess with… and now, neither is Alex.

Alex has always feared two things: losing herself in the Awakening and being placed on the Elixir. But love has always been stronger than Fate, and Aiden St. Delphi is willing to make war on the gods—and Alex herself—to bring her back.

The gods have killed thousands and could destroy entire cities in their quest to stop Seth from taking Alex’s power and becoming the all-powerful God Killer. But breaking Alex’s connection to Seth isn’t the only problem. There are a few pesky little loopholes in the whole “an Apollyon can’t be killed” theory, and the only person who might know how to stop the destruction has been dead for centuries.

Finding their way past the barriers that guard the Underworld, searching for one soul among countless millions, and then somehow returning will be hard enough. Alex might be able to keep Seth from becoming the God Killer… or she might become the God Killer herself.

I am SO excited about this book. I love the Covenant series (and Jennifer’s writing in general). Deity left off at such a critical point, right where (SPOILER) Alex awakens. Plus, so much happened in Deity in general, that I’m excited to see what happens in Apollyon. I’m probably most excited to see what happens with Seth. He’s one of my favorite characters, and after his little breakdown, I’m anxious to see what happens with him. I know he cares for Alex, but I have no idea what he will do or where his story line will go.

What are you waiting on this Wednesday?
