Goodreads Summary of Wither by Lauren DeStefano:
“By age sixteen, Rhine Ellery has four years left to live. She can thank modern science for this genetic time bomb. A botched effort to create a perfect race has left all males with a lifespan of 25 years, and females with a lifespan of 20 years. Geneticists are seeking a miracle antidote to restore the human race, desperate orphans crowd the population, crime and poverty have skyrocketed, and young girls are being kidnapped and sold as polygamous brides to bear more children. When Rhine is kidnapped and sold as a bride, she vows to do all she can to escape. Her husband, Linden, is hopelessly in love with her, and Rhine can’t bring herself to hate him as much as she’d like to. He opens her to a magical world of wealth and illusion she never thought existed, and it almost makes it possible to ignore the clock ticking away her short life. But Rhine quickly learns that not everything in her new husband’s strange world is what it seems. Her father-in-law, an eccentric doctor bent on finding the antidote, is hoarding corpses in the basement. Her fellow sister wives are to be trusted one day and feared the next, and Rhine is desperate to communicate to her twin brother that she is safe and alive. Will Rhine be able to escape–before her time runs out?
Together with one of Linden’s servants, Gabriel, Rhine attempts to escape just before her seventeenth birthday. But in a world that continues to spiral into anarchy, is there any hope for freedom?”
Okay so, before I start this I must first apologize for my very VERY long hiatus. School was just so crazy this semester and every time I thought of even trying to write something on here my teachers decided, Lets give all of the students more homework! Yeah so long story short school was absolutely insane and I will do much better this semester I promise! 🙂 ❤
Alright, now that, that little explanation is over on to the review!
Okay let me first off say that the world that Lauren DeStefano created is just completely creepy! Being a young girl who has just turned 20, I found it completely eerie that in this futuristic world I would already cease to exist, but none the less this book is simply great! The whole time I read this book I could clearly picture every scenery that was presented to me, from the house that Rhine and her brother Rowan shared in Manhattan to the elaborate parties Rhine attended on the arm of her “husband” Linden Ashby. Everything in this book was so well written and well explained that I had no problems following the world that Destefano has created.
I loved every little part of this book but one serious stand out for me is the fact that the book was just so real. From the post apocalyptic setting of a world that has been turned upside down but a miracle cure for cancer gone completely wrong, to the complexity of the all of the characters. Not only the main character Rhine, who even herself at times got lost in facade of the world of Linden Ashby, to Cecily, the love struck orphan turned mother at the young age of 13, and even Jenna, and her unwavering hate toward Linden and Housemaster Vaunghn. This book is hands down one of the best books I have read this year, and that is saying something because its December now!
Overall, I would give this book a 4.5 out 5, its definitely something everyone should read! Now, that I have completed this, ITS ON TO FEVER!! 🙂 Happy New Year you guys! And her is to another great year!
